Raising funds and awareness for Father Chris Riley's Youth Off The Streets

The Residential Colleges of the University of Sydney have teamed together to host a sleep out to raise funds and awareness for Father Chris Riley's Youth Off the Streets.

500 University of Sydney students will 'sleep it rough' in an effort to raise both money and awareness for homelessness in Australia. The event is entirely student run and will also feature entertainment with free bands, an open mic competition and rides as an added fundraising venture.

"We are passionate about using the opportunities we have been given through University to empower other young Australians who are not as fortunate and help bring them the same opportunities that we have had", Sonia explained.

"There are 50 000 Australian children under the age of 12 who are homeless every year, and this figure is simply not acceptable to us. We are determined to address this problem through engaging with our community and through leadership activities to harness the power of business and the community and together find solutions to this largely misunderstood social problem."

"We want to encourage our students to extend the hand of friendship to people whom they will never meet, and embrace the idea of using their talents for the good of others."

Miss World Australia, Caroline Pemberton will open the event through her work under Miss World's umbrella concept 'beauty with a purpose', which encourages contestants to embrace charity work and dedicate themselves to worthy causes through fundraising, volunteerism and public speaking.
